He carried Maggie to a small room on the first floor, and laid her on a bed. Then, stepping back, he shut the door, and stood face to face with his angry wife.

“I can’t believe it that you’ve brought home a sick child!” Her face was in a flame. “I think women’s hearts are sometimes very hard,” said Joe. His sudden outbreak had impressed his wife and he added quickly, “This poor motherless little one needs a family. Let’s keep her here.”

The voice of the strong, rough man shook, and he turned his head away, so that the tears in his eyes could not be seen. Mrs. Thompson did not answer, but a soft feeling crept into her heart. “Look at her kindly, Jane, and speak to her kindly,” said Joe, “Think of her dead mother, and the loneliness, the pain, the sorrow that must be on all her coming life.” Mrs. Thompson did not reply, but turned towards the little room where her husband had put Maggie: and, pushing open the door, went quietly in. Joe did not follow; he felt that it would be best to leave her alone with the child.

By Sunday evening, the ill climber was exhausted, and they had to make an unplanned camp on steep snow. They were in a bad place—on a platform about the size of a table under an ice cliff. The wind got stronger during the night, ripping the tent and snapping the poles. They tried to secure it by placing their packs and rocks around the edges. Finally, they just stuck their feet between the rocks and held the tent with their bodies. It was a cold night.

My baby Taylor!” So Pugliese went back inside, crawling(爬) through the burning room and blinding smoke, and found a young girl who was unconscious. Immediately, he rushed her down the stairs and gave her mouth-to-mouth to bring her round. To Pugliese’s relief, she woke up and started to cry. Then she was taken by ambulance to hospital for further examination.

Soon, the touching story made headlines in the local newspaper. People were full of praise for Pugliese’s bravery. But he just said “I was just in the right place at the right time”. After that, Pugliese didn’t see Taylor ever again, but he always thought of her and wondered how she was going.

Taylor, now a registered nurse in Alexandria, Virginia, has never forgotten him, too. She has kept the newspaper article documenting her being rescued by Pugliese from a burning New York apartment since she was a child. As she got older, she wished she could find Pugliese and thank him face to face—a desire that grew stronger after she became an emergency room nurse, as she learned how rare it was to hear from patients she met on the worst days of their lives again.

The risk of pre-schooling

“Young children learning to read is one of the most important things primary education does. It’s fundamental to children making progress in life,” says Dominic Wyse, a professor of primary education at University College London, in the UK. “While learning literacy is vital to childern, the way we teach it really matters.”

In a 2022 report, he states that English school system’s intense focus on phonics – a method that involves matching the sound of a spoken word or letter, with individual written letters, through a process called “sounding out” – could be failing some children. A reason for this is that the tests used to assess that early learning may have little to do with the skills actually needed to read and enjoy books or other meaningful texts. For example, the tests may ask pupils to “sound out” and spell nonsense words, to prevent them from simply guessing, or recognising familiar words. Since nonsense words are not meaningful language, children may find the task difficult and puzzling. It doesn’t end up being meaningful, it ends up being memorising rather than understanding context.

Children who attend intensive preschools do not have higher academic abilities in later grades than those who did not attend such preschools, several studies now show. Early education can however have a positive impact on social development – which in turn feeds into the likelihood of graduation from school and university as well as being associated with lower crime rates. In short, attending preschool can have positive effects on later achievement in life, but not necessary on academic skills.

Too much academic pressure may even cause problems in the long run. A study published in January 2022 suggested that those who attended a preschool with a strong academic emphasis, showed lower academic achievements a few years later, compared to those who had not gained a place.

Scientists say that background noise in the ocean has increased roughly by 15 decibels (分贝) in the past 50 years. It may not sound like much in overall terms, but it is enough, according to many marine biologists, to mask the normal sounds of ocean life going about its business. At its most intense, some even say noise causes whales to become disoriented, dolphins to suffer from ‘the bends’, fish to go deaf, leave their breeding grounds or fail to form groups—enough to disorganize the basic biology of two thirds of the planet.

“Undersea noise pollution is like the death of a thousand cuts”, says Sylvia Earie, chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “Each sound in itself may not be a matter of critical concern, but taken all together, the noise from shipping, earthquake-related surveys, and military activity is creating a totally different environment than existed even 50 years ago. That high level of noise is bound to have a hard, sweeping impact on life in the sea.

The second reason that the early childhood environment has such a strong role in children’s development is because of the amount of time children spend in these environments. Many children spend a large portion of their wakeful hours in early childhood setting. For example, a baby beginning child care will spend up to 12,000 hours in the program. This is more time than he will spend in both elementary and secondary schools. Children will typically spend another 4,000 hours in kindergarten through third grade classrooms.

Anita Rui Olds, a well-known environmental designer, believes that we should design our early childhood environments for miracles, not minimums. She states: “Children are miracles. Believing that every child is a miracle can transform the way we design for children’s care. When we invite a miracle into our lives, we prepare ourselves and the environment around us. We make it our job to create, with great respect and gratitude, a space that is worthy of a miracle!

Sitting at her desk, Julia dialed her new neighbour, Marco, who’d always come through for her whenever she needed help, asking him if he could look after Ashley.

“No problem, I love hanging out with Ashley, and she’s a lot of joy to be around.”

“I’m sure she feels the same way about you,” Julia laughed. “Look, I’m sorry again for troubling you and thanks.”

Julia was on her way home after work when she was unexpectedly called back. It was an emergency case, and there was a shortage of nurses. Julia called Marco and informed him she’d be home later than usual, and he said it was fine.

Zaharias died of cancer in 1956, at the age of 45.
