2025届湖北省高中名校联盟高三下学期第四次联合测评英语试题)Scientists have discovered that many animals, including hermit crabs, rats, and fish, have distinct personalities. These animals show consistent behavioral differences over time and in various situations, just like dogs and cats, as pet owners know.

But how do social situations affect individual personalities? University of Bristol biologist Christos CLoannou and his colleagues sought to find out by turning to a small fish called the three-spined stickleback, which inhabits mildly salty coastal water throughout the Northern Hemisphere. “They’re found both as individuals and in social groups in the wild,” making them perfect for personality assessments across different settings, Loannou says.

The researchers took 80 fish and placed each under a protective cover at one end of a tank, with food at the opposite end. Crossing the tank to feed would seem risky to the sticklebacks because open water typically exposes them to the threat of danger.

The researchers studied them over several days, observing that braver fish quickly left their shelter to get food, while shyer ones took longer to emerge and swam across the tank more cautiously. However, when 10 fish were placed together under a cover, individual personalities disappeared, with the braver fish acting as group leaders, waiting for others to catch up. “The first individuals come out quickly but wait when they realize they’re not being followed,” Loannou explains. However, when separated from the group, the fish returned to their original behaviors. These results, showing how group dynamics influence individual characteristics, were published in Science Advances in September.

The new findings suggest that group dynamics restrict individual personalities, and the researchers say it is the first time that such restriction has been clearly linked to an underlying cause: the need to conform when faced with a risky decision.

Animal personality researchers have historically focused on individuals while ignoring group behavior, and collective behavior researchers have focused on groups while downplaying individual differences, according to University of St Andrews animal behavior researcher Mike Webster, who was not involved. “This study brings those two research streams together,” showing that animal personalities are flexible yet consistent, he says.

275What made sticklebacks chosen for the study?

ACoastal habitat. BSafety awareness.

CStrong individuality. DSocial flexibility.

276Which best describes the impact of group dynamics on individual personalities?

APredictable. BTemporary.

CImmediate. DSlight.

277What does the underlined word “conform” mean in paragraph 5?

278What can we infer about the research from the last paragraph?

AIt fills a gap in animal behavior research.

BIt reveals the role of animal group behavior.

CIt challenges adaptable animal personalities.

DIt proves animal personalities disappear in groups.

2025届陕西省山西省宁夏青海省四省高三下学期第二次模拟考试英语试题)Some great apes () realize when a human partner doesn’t know something and are capable of communicating information to him to change his behavior, a new study shows. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University studying a species of apes, bonobos, found that they would point to where treats were hidden if they saw their human partner didn’t know where they were.

Working with three male bonobos, study co-author Luke Townrow would sit across a table from one of the animals as another person placed a treat under one of three cups. In some cases, Townrow would be allowed to see which cup the treat was under, and the bonobo would wait for him to pass it the food. At other times, he would not be able to see where the treat was, and the bonobo would point to the right cup to help him find the food. The seemingly simple experiment demonstrated for the first time that apes will communicate unknown information in the name of teamwork.

Chris Krupenye, another co-author, said that the study “is one of the clearest pieces of evidence that a non-human primate (灵长类动物) understands when someone else is ignorant.” This ability to discover gaps in others’ knowledge is known as theory of mind. “As humans, we have theory of mind,” Krupenye said. “It’s a key feature of human psychology,” he added, explaining that it allows us to cooperate with each other and teach people things that we understand they do not know.

Theory of mind has previously been considered unique to humans, but the study shows that bonobos share this capability. “The evidence we have is a good indication that they do have theory of mind,” said Krupenye.

The team plans to explore the bonobos’ motivations for sharing information and the way that they think about other individuals’ minds. “What we’ve shown here is that apes will communicate with a partner to change their behavior,” Townrow said, “but a key open question for further research is whether apes are also pointing to change their partner’s mental state or their beliefs.”

271What can be learned about the experiment?

AThe number of cups wasn’t fixed.

BThe bonobos fixed their attention on the treat.

CThe researchers guided the bonobos to find the treat.

DThe bonobos got rewards for sharing information with the researchers.

272Which of the following can be defined as “theory of mind”?

ACompleting complex tasks. BUnderstanding others’ views.

CHiding one’s true feelings. DCommunicating with animals.

273What is the next target for the researchers in their study?

AThe bonobos’ motivations to find the treat.

BThe bonobos’ method of delivering messages.

CThe bonobos’ way of perceiving others’ minds.

2025·江西·模拟预测)In a recent study, Keren Papier at the University of Oxford and her colleagues used 16 years of data on more than 540,000 women in the UK. The researchers found that every additional 300 milligrams of calcium () per day was associated with a 17 per cent reduction in risk. “This is the most comprehensive single study ever conducted into the relationship between diet and colorectal cancer (结直肠癌), and it highlights the potential protective role of dairy products, largely due to calcium, in the development of colorectal cancer,” says Papier.

Papier’s study agrees with another recent paper that followed more than 470,000 adults for over 20 years. This similarly found an association between reduced colorectal cancer risk and higher calcium consumption.

A third study, led by Shuji Ogino in Boston, adds to the evidence, but turns the spotlight away from calcium. His team followed some 87,000 women for 40 years and 45,000 men for 30 years. At least two servings of plain yogurt a week, which contained Bifidobacterium bacteria (双歧杆菌), was linked to a 20 per cent lower rate of colorectal cancer.

When it comes to calcium pills, a 2018 report for Cancer Research suggests that they decrease the risk of colorectal cancer, but another study found that they may increase the risk of diseases that may lead to the condition. Given the widespread use of these pills, further research is needed, says Papier. The benefits of Bifidobacterium bacteria are also unknown, says Ogino.

To him, these studies illustrate the complex connection between our diet and cancer risk, with there being no shortcut to health. “If people try to go to a supermarket and buy more plain yogurt, then that’s good, but if they just stop in a day or two, there is no effect.”

People should try to follow all the cancer prevention advice such as being active and not smoking, and “not focus on the potential benefits of one food or one nutrient”, says Mathers, a health expert.

264What did Keren Papier’s study find?

ACalcium from dairy products can cure cancer.

BMore calcium leads to better colorectal cancer fighting.

CThe daily consumption of 300 mg of calcium is necessary.

DExtra calcium consumption is linked to a lower colorectal cancer risk.

265What is the key difference between Papier’s and Ogino’s studies?

AStudy focus. BStudy duration.

CResearch method. DParticipants’ gender.

266What is the best way to prevent cancer according to Mathers?

AFollow experts’ guidelines. BFocus on food and nutrient.

CTake all factors into account. DEmphasize the involvement in sports.

267What would be the best title for this passage?

AYogurt vs. Calcium: Which One Works Better?

BCalcium Pills: Their Role in Cancer Prevention

CColorectal Cancer Risk: How to Reduce It Effectively?

DDiet Choices: Their Impact on Colorectal Cancer Prevention

24-25高三下·安徽安庆·期中)Taylor Swift fans really know how to “Shake It Off” — and shake the ground. Scientists studied how the stadium and ground trembled during one of Swift’s Eras Tour concerts last August. They discovered that dancing fans generated shaking in the ground — earthquake waves that matched the beat of each song. During Swift’s performance of “Shake It Off”, the stands released about as much energy as a magnitude 0.85 earthquake, which is not quite strong enough to be felt by humans.

This isn’t the first time scientists have measured quakes from a stadium. In 2011, Seattle Seahawks fans shook their home stadium with cheers after a stunning touchdown. And last July, Swifties rocked the ground at a Seattle concert. The shaking from those events differs from an earthquake. Earthquakes usually last only a few seconds. A “concert quake” can last several minutes. Besides, the ground also moves in different ways during quakes and concerts. Earthquakes happen when big tectonic (地壳的) plates move around. Those motions perpetually change the ground. In contrast, the shaking caused by crowds “is more like splashing (泼水) in a pool,” explains Gabrielle Tepp, a professor at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. “You see the waves coming out, but then once you’re done splashing, it just goes back to normal.” The “concert quake” doesn’t usually deform the Earth.

Tepp and her colleagues used similar instruments to detect earthquakes and concert quakes. In the new study, they set up a portable speaker next to a motion sensor in their lab and turned the speaker volume all the way up. They also played Swift’s “Love Story” at the speakers’ highest volume. Tepp even jumped around near the sensor while dancing to the last chorus. The sensor picked up the quaking which matched that from the concert only when Tepp was jumping around, which suggests that the shaking measured at the concert came from fans jumping and dancing, too.

The findings tell scientists about more than just concert shaking. Understanding how a stadium quakes in response to a large crowd could help make buildings safer, says Golos. “We can also better understand human behavior using such seismic data”, she says. “I think there’s a lot of interesting information hidden in there.”

260What is the function of the first paragraph?

ATo introduce the main argument.

BTo provide background information.

ATo test the effectiveness of the motion sensor.

BTo figure out the quake source of the concert.

CTo prove that Taylor Swift’s songs can cause ground-shaking.

DTo study the relationship between music volume and ground-shaking.

263What’s the significance of the research?

AIt guides fans to behave well at a concert.

BIt predicts when and where an earthquake will happen.

CIt improves stage design and sound effect of a concert.

DIt lays a foundation for creating safer architecture.

2025届湖北省部分学校高三下学期考前信息卷一英语试题(含听力))Your Kids Must Visit These Fun Farms

There are many local farms and animal farms to visit with children in Pennsylvania. Most of these farms are within an hour’s drive from Philadelphia.

The Barn at Springbrook Farm in Unionville:

It sits on 13 acres of open space including grassland, gardens, and natural paths. Their fully accessible Chester County Bank Barn (谷仓) was designed specifically to provide opportunities for children with disabilities to participate in animal-assisted activities.

Cherry Crest Farm in Lancaster County:

Cherry Crest Farm has a ton of interesting things, including animals, corn mazes (迷宫) and so much more. But it also gets very crowded during the peak months and is one of the most expensive farm outings. It would be better to take older kids there but not babies. Still, it has lots of fun.

Linvilla Orchards in Media:

Linvilla has a ton to offer as far as activities for kids — the animals, mini golf, all kinds of festivals, treasure hunt, apple picking and strawberry picking, and a gift shop. It sits right outside of Philadelphia, but once you’re there you’d never know how close to the city you are.

Baily’s Dairy Farm in Pocopson:

It’s perfect for you when you just want to visit a farm with your kids but maybe don’t want to make a whole day of it. Just a great place to visit and it is free except for what you purchase. They have bunnies, ducks, geese, chickens, roosters, cats, cows, goats, and sheep.

2025届湖北省部分学校高三下学期考前信息卷一英语试题(含听力))DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup founded in 2023, has gained significant popularity, including ranking as the top free app on Apple’s App Store. Eager to understand how DeepSeek measures up against ChatGPT, I conducted a comprehensive comparison between the two platforms.

As for testing the summarization of research paper, I entered the prompt (指令) “Summarize the key findings of the latest AI research paper on multi-modal learning in 150 words.” ChatGPT offered a comprehensive summary of the key findings but did not provide as thorough a response in the number of words required. DeepSeek went beyond the word-limit, but provided a more comprehensive and informative summary of the paper’s key findings, which is slightly better due to its more detailed and specific language.

I also tested how they would solve complex problems. I used the prompt “A train leaves New York at 8:00 am traveling west at 60 mph. Another train leaves Los Angeles at 6:00 am traveling east at 70 mph on the same track. If the distance between New York and Los Angeles is 2,800 miles, at what time will the two trains meet?”

ChatGPT showed the math as it usually does. When the answer came out, I thought for sure that DeepSeek would get the same one and ChatGPT would simply lose for being slower. However, after determining the answer myself, I discovered that ChatGPT got the answer wrong, immediately disqualifying it in this round.

DeepSeek made me literally say, “Wow!” The speed at which the AI came up with the answer was faster than ChatGPT. In fact, it was so fast that I was sure it had made a mistake. After checking the math by hand and even using Claude as a tie breaker, I was able to determine that DeepSeek was the one who got the answer right.

By presenting more prompts to both ChatGPT and DeepSeek, I was able to compare their responses and determine which model performs better in each specific area. While neither AI is perfect, I was able to conclude that DeepSeek was the ultimate winner. It is no wonder that DeepSeek is quickly gaining popularity to the point that the platform is limiting user registration.

245How was DeepSeek’s performance when summarizing?

AIt provided a less comprehensive summary.

BIt followed quite strictly to the word-limit.

CIt used more detailed and specific language.

DIt was disqualified for incorrect information.

246Why did the author initially think DeepSeek had made a mistake according to Paragraph 5?

ABecause its answer was different from ChatGPT’s.

BBecause it provided the answer faster than expected.

CBecause it used more concise answer than ChatGPT.

DBecause its answer was the same as Claude’s calculation.

247What are the author’s criteria for winner?

①Strict limitation to word count. ②The comprehensive summarization ability.

③Detailed and specific language. ④The speed of giving right answers.

A①②③ B①②④ C①③④ D②③④

248What is the main reason for DeepSeek’s recent popularity?

AIt is a new AI startup. BIt limits user registration.

CIt provides better answers. DIt ranks as the top free app.
